TIME: 1:30 - 3:30
CLASS FEE: $11.00
INSTRUCTOR: Teresa Stoller
SUPPLY LIST below: Supplies are available at the Palm Coast location of the Byrd’s Nest.........you will receive a 15% discount on class supplies!
PLEASE HELP US: For the comfort and well being of all, please do not wear any type of scented product to class, (e.g., perfume, cologne, body splash, powders, lotions, creams, etc.). Your classmates and/or instructor may suffer from serious health issues, such as asthma or allergies. In addition, please turn your cell phone to 'silent' / 'vibrate' prior to coming to class. In order to avoid distractions in the classroom, please make or take phone calls outside. Thank you so much for your assistance and understanding!
FABRIC #1: 9"x12" piece of white or very light color for the foundation......this is what you will cover with the Angelina fibers. Keep in mind that Angelina can be somewhat translucent when placed atop your fabric; therefore, you may want to avoid a dark and/or busy print.
FABRIC #2: Two 9"x12" pieces for backing. Because white was used on the back of the sample, the backing is composed of two pieces, layered, to prevent the black thread on the back from showing. If you are using a darker fabric on the back, you will only need ONE 9" x 12" piece of fabric. You may want to keep an additional small scrap of this fabric at home to attach as a sleeve after class.
FABRIC #3: One 1 1/2" x 9" strip, and one 1 1/2" x 12" strip. These are the foundation of the cross.
FABRIC #4: Approximately 52" of binding. You can use commercial binding or make your own. White double fold was used in the sample.
BATTING: 9"x12" piece of low loft cotton batting.
FUSIBLE WEB: Approximately 3/8 to 1/2 yard of SteamASeam2 or HeatNBond. 12" wide SteamASeam2 was used in the sample. CUT ONE PIECE 9" X 12" FOR THE BACKGROUND......bring the rest to trace the floral shapes. Please check your product to ensure it is 'fresh'......if you notice that your fusible web has 'cracks' or is 'peeling', you will need to replace it. Cracks and peeling can be signs of old or improperly stored product. To help extend its shelf life, keep your fusible web in a cool dry place.
BLACK PERMANENT MARKER: Such as Sharpie or Pigma Micron, for tracing the flower and leaves. Your marker must be permanent.......non-permanent (water soluble) will smudge and simply do not dry on the release paper of the fusible web. A pencil will work fine.......just make sure it is dark enough for you to see when tracing.
A NOTE ABOUT ANGELINA FIBERS AND FILM, and FABRIC FOIL: Feel free to experiment with color in this little project! A background of raspberry or plum Angelina fibers would be fantastic here, too! What about some gold or copper Angelina fibers radiating around the cross (instead of the lemon yellow)??!!
ANGELINA FIBERS: Colors used in the sample - - blue (background), lemon yellow (small part of background), Christmas green and lime green (leaves).
ANGELINA FILM: Just about any of the crystalina colors will work (blaze, etc.); winter white film is great, too. How about a yellow or pale pink??!! A white film was used for the lily. You can substitute a small scrap of white fabric here, too! About a 4" x 4" piece.
FABRIC FOIL ADHESIVE: Gray cold adhesive is the product that will be available at the Byrd's Nest. This type is used because it dries quickly and allows the foil to be used successfully within minutes.
FABRIC FOIL: Gold was used in the sample. This foil will be available at Byrd's Nest in Palm Coast. If purchasing foil and adhesive from another source, PLEASE ensure that your product is intended for use on fabric......many foils are intended for 'craft' use on surfaces such as wood or walls.
SMALL SPONGE APPLICATOR BRUSH: Or a new clean kitchen sponge that has been cut up into (approximately) 2" chunks (you need one piece); or, a new clean make up sponge (not pads). Any of these can be used to apply your cold adhesive for foiliing.
CLOVER FUSIBLE 1/4" BIAS TAPE, BLACK: Two 6" strips and four 10" strips.
BLACK THREAD: For stitching down the black bias tape and for stitching around the flower and leaves. Cotton or poly is fine......whatever you are comfortable using.
THREAD: Color of your choice for attaching the binding. You may choose to complete this step at home.
BOBBINS: When choosing bobbin thread color, remember that it will show on the back of your piece........consider the back of the binding, too. I used black while stitching around the bias tape and floral pieces, and then used a lighter color when the backing and binding was attached.
SEWING MACHINE: In good working order and one with which you are comfortable. Remember your foot control and power cord.
BASIC SEWING ACCESSORIES: Including, but not limited to, scissors, seam ripper, extra rotary cutter blades, etc.,.......all the things you usually use when you sew!
ROTARY CUTTER, ACRYLIC RULER AND CUTTING MAT: 45 mm cutter and a 'classroom size' mat are great. A 12" x 18" or 18" x 24" mat is sufficient. PLEASE be sure you have a new sharp blade in your cutter. A dull blade will 'shred' rather than cut through your fused Angelina!
