BOOK: Fabulous Fractures by Brenda Esslinger
NOTE: Fabric yardage suggestions are for a pillowcase for a 14" square pillow.
FABRIC #1 for the 'fracture':
- You will need 4 repeats of one motif. Consider a motif that is approximately 3"- 5" in diameter/length, and one that is easy to 'see' on the fabric. For example, a floral with a larger focus flower is great; but, avoid a 'busy' floral that has no focus motif. Certain Asian fabric prints make great choices, too. For example, some koi or crane prints make nice fractures. Avoid motifs that have 'eyes', as the eyes 'multiply' when fractured, and most people find it disturbing to view a piece that has multiple eyes!
- The amount of yardage needed will depend on the repeat that occurs in the fabric. You will need enough fabric to cut four 7 1/2" squares with an identical repeat, which we will cut in class. Approximately 1/2 yard to 5/8 yard is typical. The sample shows a flower from the Flower Show III collection at the Byrd's Nest.
*Note: The fabrics listed below allow for some 'extra' fabric to be left over; if you are comfortable calculating the yardage needed for your pillow, feel free to alter these amounts.
FABRIC #2: 1/2 yard for the border. This is the light teal in the sample. Cut four 4 1/2" x 22" strips.
FABRIC #3: 1/8 yard for the inner trim. This is the gold fabric in the sample. Cut four 1" x 22" strips.
FABRIC #4: For non-directional fabric, 1/2 yard for the backing.
ROTARY CUTTER, ACRYLIC RULER AND CUTTING MAT: Remember to have a new sharp blade in your rotary cutter. Small classroom size mat, such as 12" x 18" or 12" x 24" will work. Bring your 'long' acrylic ruler, e.g., 6" x 24". Your finished project will be approximately 15" square, so you will want to bring an appropriately sized square ruler to square up your project, (i.e., 15" or larger square).
BLACK PERMANENT MARKER: This will be used to number the pieces cut for the project.
BLUE PAINTER'S TAPE or 'OFFICE DOTS': 'office dots' ......those brightly colored adhesive circle labels (or something similar) or blue painter's tape. You will number your pieces using these 'labels'.
THREAD: For piecing.
BOBBINS filled.
SEWING MACHINE: in good working order, and one with which you are comfortable. Remember your foot control and power cord.
BASIC SEWING ACCESSORIES: including scissors, seam ripper, pins, etc........bring the things you usually use when sewing.
